Matte Painting
Programs Used:
Photoshop
One of the first projects I got to tackle while pursuing my Visual Effects was a matte painting. My VSFX 101 professor assigned us to get 1920 x 1080 pixel photo, add in a new sky, and add or remove 5 objects from the image to create a narrative. At the time I was a little obsessed with Chernobyl documentaries and decided to take an image of a hotel inside the Quarantine Zone and turn it into the last vestiges of a theme park.
After Effects
Original
This image was a pretty sunny day with very clear directional shadows so the challenge was finding images that already matched this lighting, or editing them and adding shadows so they would fit in.
Final Image
*I do not own any images used in this project, I am only responsible for comping them together.
I’d say the hardest part about this matte painting was masking around all the leaves in the trees. That was what took up most of my time when working on this because I didn’t want to lose any of the detail. My favorite part would have to be the bumper cars in the bottom left corner. I felt that those were pretty well integrated lighting wise and how they are placed on the ground plane.
